Kicking a Goal for Charity

Each player received a Cemex Soccer Ball.

On Sunday, 17 August, the Grays Point Soccer Association hosted a Gala Day for the under 9’s soccer players whilst raising money for a great cause.

Around 300 children from the Sutherland Shire competed in a round of matches played from 8am to 3pm at Grays Point Oval, Angle Road, Grays Point.

Organisers from the Soccer Club generously donated the profits from the BBQ and the canteen to Technical Aid to the Disabled (TADNSW).

Each player also received a full sized soccer ball thanks to the generosity of TADNSW sponsor Cemex.

TAD is a unique charity that provides personalised equipment and advice to people with disabilities and their carers, through the innovative services of skilled volunteers and staff.

Sutherland Shire Councillor Melanie Gibbons, who also works for TAD, said they were very grateful for such generous community support.

“TAD has helped make life a little easier for people with disabilities for over 30 years. In that time, our volunteers have developed over 25,000 devices that have assisted people with disabilities from all age groups. Every cent helps us continue to do this important work,” Clr Gibbons said.

“TAD helps mums, who might be in a wheelchair, by modifying cots and prams for better access and safety.  The hassle is also taken out of meal times, as our modified chairs for children with disabilities, help the family eat together.

“We also customise special school chairs to aid participation in the classroom, and our low cost refurbished computers encourage learning and assist with research and assignments.

“Children with disabilities can join in on bike rides with their brothers, sisters and friends, with a special FREEDOM WHEELS modified bike.  These are customised to each child’s needs giving them an opportunity we all take for granted.

“Other projects help with bath time, playing, and just keeping up with their peers. TAD helps everyone, no matter what age or disability, but projects that assist children are special as they help to provide a better start in life.

Our project costs are kept to a minimum as our volunteers donate their skills and labour,” Clr Gibbons said.

TAD volunteers also sold raffle tickets on the day, with great sporting memorabilia prizes up for grabs. Thanks to the perfect weather it was a great day for the whole family.

Volunteer Chris Scott spoke about ageing and disability housing.
TADNSW CEO Joy Barrett hands out a free CEMEX soccer ball for each competitor with Soccer Gala day organiser Paul Kelly.
TAD President told TAD's "story" to the delegates.
TAD President Bill Phippen, Board Member Malcolm Lye and Director of Services Alan McGregor manned the BBQ on the day.
